Blood Land: A Story of Reparations

Front cover of my debut novel, Blood Land

The year 2020 has been nothing short of unbelievable for us all. It has been full of so much bad news, including this global pandemic that has wreaked havoc on every aspect of our lives.

Despite all the tragedy, I have managed to accomplish my life’s dream. On August 29th, I not only turned FIFTY, but I became a published author!

The book, as you can see from the photo, is entitled Blood Land. It is a paranormal suspense novel about an African American couple, Paul and Theresa, who are the new owners of a former plantation in Maryland. They feel proud to have taken back some of the lands where Africans and Blacks were enslaved. However, the historic property is a little more than they bargained for: it is haunted by the ghost of an enslaved girl who was kidnapped during the height of the Haitian Revolution, brought to Maryland, and enslaved on the former plantation they now call home.

The young apparition, Fillele, begins to communicate with Theresa, causing her to see and hear strange things she cannot explain. Things that are taking their toll on the health of her and her unborn child. Paul wants to sell the house and save his wife’s life. Theresa wants to dig deeper into the past of the former plantation because she knows the answer to what is happening lies in the history of the old home.

The more Theresa digs, the more she learns about Fillele, and the more conflicts that arise between her, her husband, her mother, and the apparition itself.

There’s an other-worldly turf war going on for this old home, and Theresa is at the center of it. She not only fights for her own life, but for the history of the old home, which may or may not have a connection to Theresa’s own family history.

Writing this book was a three-year process. Though there were many challenges, I thoroughly enjoyed bringing this story to life.
